COASTAL PADDLING ROUTES
OF
NOVA SCOTIA

With a meandering shoreline so extensive that unravelling it would take you over to Europe and back, Nova Scotia's countless harbours and headlands, inlets and islands, have become a world class sea kayaking destination. The contrasts are exceptional and there is something for every taste and skill level. You can follow a glacier-scoured coast, relax on a soft sand beach, poke into a sea cave, or camp in the splendid isolation of a deserted island. Often your only companions will be the seals and sea birds.

Our diverse destinations range from the rocky Atlantic coast and the beaches of the Northumberland Strait, to the Highlands of Cape Breton and the extreme tides of the Bay of Fundy. All are readily accessible on our extensive coastal highways and wherever you roam in the province you will never be more than 55 km from saltwater. So leave the bugs and portages to the inland waterways, bring your kayak and explore our shores. Better still, make use of one of the outfitters. They can supply you with the appropriate equipment and advice, or take you on a guided tour and describe the biology, geology and history of this fascinating environment where the land meets the sea.

The following routes outline 42 of the best coastal paddling areas in the province. They have been excerpted from Sea Kayaking in Nova Scotia, (author: Scott Cunningham) which is available in most provincial bookstores. Many can be covered in a day or weekend, or they can be combined to create a multi-day tour.
