DESCRIPTION
The Salmon River maintained trail begins after you cross the brook that joins Otter
and Barren Lakes. Take care crossing this bridge as it is a little rickety. The
trail heads north along the edge of Otter Lake and up the east side of the Salmon
River. The forest here is mainly softwood consisting of red spruce and large
white pine. Be on the look out for ruffed grouse and porcupine which frequent
this area.
The trail continues for about 4 km and passes several lakes on the way including
Otter Lake, Crowbar Lake, Porcupine Lake, and Salmon River Long Lake. Halfway up
Crowbar Lake the trail crosses a small stream/wet area. There is a foot bridge made
from logs, but crossing can be difficult during very high water.
Keep an eye out for a possible beaver, muskrat, or black duck. This trail is not a
loop so you must return the way you came. The entire trail is about a 3 hour hike.
There is a gas station and two convenience stores close to the access road on
highway 7.
