DESCRIPTION
The Delaps Cove Wilderness Trail System consists of 2 main trails: Bohaker Trail and
Charlies Trail. There is also a third trail (a logging road), the Shore Road Trail
which links the two main trails together. The area was once a small, but thriving
settlement of Africans who fished for cod and herring, or farmed the rich soils here.
Along the trails, watch for signs of this old community.
The Bohaker Trail is a 2.2 km loop which takes about 45 minutes to complete. The trail
leads to a look off beside Bohaker Falls which, at 40 ft in height, is beautiful to
watch, especially during the spring runoff. The trail then runs along the shore for
about half a kilometre. The vegetation along the trail was once used for food remedies
or for rituals by the people who lived in the area. Some species of vegetation to be
seen along the trail include Maple, Spruce, Birch and Cherry trees, ferns, berries,
and several types of seaweed.
Charlies Trail is a 1.9 km trek and takes about 45 minutes to complete. The beginning
of the trail is at the end of Shore Road Trail. This trail is different than the others
in that it travels through an older forest. There are several side trails going down to
the shore, and there is also an observation deck looking over Charlies Cove. Look along
the path for two old foundations. Vegetation along this trail includes goldthread and a
variety of ferns. People also enjoy searching the shoreline for semi-precious stones.
The Shore Road Trail is 2.7 km long (one way) and takes about 45 minutes to complete. It
is an abandoned road with some vegetation along the edges. This trail is very wet and
muddy at times.
For more information on the history and features of these trails, be sure to pick up the
brochure and maps at the trailhead. Also, there are parking, washrooms and a picnic areas
here. Nearby there is a campground and rental cottages.
